The Kentucky Derby: A Historical Look At Horse Racings Finest

The Kentucky Derby, the premier horse race of all horse races, has a checkered history that spans 130 years. At first, it struggled to survive, owing its success to the men and women who created and sustained it.

The dream started with a young man, Col. M. Lewis Clark, grandson of Gen. William Clark, the explorer. He visited England and France in 1872 and decided that he would start a racetrack in Kentucky to revive the states horse breeding industry. Development began soon after the trip on 80 acres he obtained from his two uncles, John and Henry Churchill. Funding was through membership subscriptions that sold at $100 a piece. The track was officially opened on May 17, 1875. Four races were held that day and the winner of the featured race, the Kentucky Derby, was a horse named Aristides. Two African Americans, Oliver Lewis and Ansel Williamson, trained and jockeyed Aristides. Throughout the years, the Kentucky Derby became the focal event for Churchill Downs.

Eventually, the Kentucky State Fair held activities at Churchill Downs, but the main attraction was then and still is today betting on that special horse to win. In 1875, the prize for winning was

New York Giants 2006 Preview

The New York Giants were 11-6 last season and made it to the playoffs as the NFC East champions. All year long the talk was about quarterback Eli Manning. Was he just like his more successful brother Payton? That question was answered in the playoffs when, just like his brother, Eli failed to show up. The Giants were absolutely destroyed in their lone playoff game. Eli was nowhere to be found. They are hoping to turn things around this season.

Quarterback

Eli Manning is starting to mature. Initially, he had real problems with road games. Hes starting to get over his infancy in the NFL and become a more stable quarterback. Manning still has issues with completing passes, but hes expected to grow more this season. If he stays healthy and improves his play, he will be a good asset for the team. As quarterbacks go, hes about middle of the pack.

Running Back

Its no surprise that the backfield is the strength of this team. Last season Tiki Barber had a tremendous year. He rushed for 1,860 yards and gave Sean Alexander a run for his money. Blocking for him is Jim Finn. The Giants have one

Nearly anything you can dream of, either by definition or in a drawing, can be formed into a unique creation by those who prefer this kind of art. While assorted clients choose a tattoo which is either undeniably simple and basic, such as one’s name or initials, or a detail which is completely original and specific to them, there are a bunch of styles which are widely popular.

1. Consider Your Age

If you are in the 55 to 65 age range, retirement will already seem attractive to you. First of all consider your age. Realistically speaking, we only have limited number of years on this earth. Look at what you would still like to accomplish with those remaining years. Would you like to spend time going around the world? Or do you have any goals you wish to fulfill if it werent for the daily grind of work? If that is so then you can factor in these goals and lay out a time table for your retirement and activities afterwards.

Another age-related issue to consider is your actual age. You actual age is a measurement to verify how old your body really is. Have ever wondered why some people look about 5 years younger than they really are? This could be because their bodies really are of that age. The

Discount Broadway Shows

There is always a rush for tickets for popular Broadway shows. For those who are in the Broadway area, tickets are generally available at the counter of the theater showing the show, or the official box office. Although generally tickets can be had when someone arrives in person to buy one, this can be risky, especially for popular shows. When the show is popular advance booking is an option, but usually it is expensive. There are, however, various ways to get the best deal in tickets for Broadway shows.

For the price-conscious, the best deal is to stand in the long lines at the red-and-white TKTS booths. These booths are easily found in the South Street Sea Port (199 Water Street) and the center of Times Square (47th street at Broadway). TKTS are operated by a non-profitable organization, the Theatre Development Fund, whose purpose is to make cheap theater tickets available to the ordinary theater lover. They generally sub charge $3 per ticket and accept only cash. The main discomforting factor is having to stand in long lines for hours.

For individuals for whom time is not a constraint, opting to be a volunteer usher is the best way

How Headphones Work

We use headphones all the time to listen to MP3s and DVDs, play musical instruments, and more. But how exactly do they work?

Essentially, headphones are a pair of transducers that receive electrical signals from some sort of media player or receiver. The headphones speakers convert these signals to sound waves that your ears can then hear. Based on this description, you may immediately think of how telephones and radios function. And indeed, headphones preceded both of these inventions.

There are four basic types of headphones: circumaural, supra-aural, earbuds/earphones, and canalphones. The differences between them are mostly visible they vary in size and style. A lot of people these days are concerned only on the looks and style of the heaphone…I feel thats a bad thing. You should be more concerned about the quality and durability of the headphones you are purchasing, rather than worry how you are going to look with them on your head. Would you rather have a great listening experience that will last a long time, or would you rather look better and have a bad listening experience?

The perfect diet, anyone?

Just recently, a South American teenage model died of suspected malnutrition. That sad news topped the headlines and stunned the fashion industry. It happened just six months after her size zero sister starved herself to death on a diet of lettuce leaves and Diet Coke. Like her elder sister, preliminary indications suggest that she died suddenly of a heart attack, as a result of malnutrition. In response to these incidents, ultra-thin or size zero models were barred from participating in the Madrid Fashion Week 2006. Organizers of the fashion show for the Milan leg also followed suit.

Solving The Utensil Puzzle

Many people know how to navigate place settings and know when to use each utensil. How to hold those knives, forks and spoons, where to put them when you are not using them and what to do with them at the end of the course or the meal may still be a challenge. Glancing around you while dining out and trying to get a clue from others may not solve the problem. A quick study of people eating out will reveal that there are almost as many ways to hold a knife or fork as there people using them.

The fork is held between the first knuckle of the third finger and the tip of the index finger with the thumb to steady the handle. This is much the same way that you would hold a pencil although observation will tell you that there are variations on that as well.

The knife is held between your thumb and third finger with the index finger resting on the top of the blade. If this seems awfully basic, look around. You’ll find people gripping the knife like a dagger and holding the fork like a miniature cello.

There are two [...] Continue Reading…
